A ground source heat pump makes for an innovative and renewable heating system, but there are a few things to bear in mind. The unit itself contains a heat pump cylinder and will be over a metre tall, so you'll need to have enough space for it. 

Secondly, you'll also need an area of land near or around the home to install the pipes. You can either drill boreholes for coils or dig trenches for a ground loop system. Whichever approach you take, the ground must be soft enough for digging and away from tree roots too.
