A thermostat is necessary on a hot water tank for several key reasons, including safety, energy efficiency, and preventing bacterial growth. 

Safety (Preventing Scalds): A thermostat prevents the water from being heated to a dangerously high temperature. Water at or above 65°C can cause serious burns in seconds, especially for children and the elderly. The thermostat acts as a safety control, ensuring the water remains at a safe temperature.

Energy Efficiency: A thermostat prevents your boiler or immersion heater from constantly running. Once the water in the tank reaches the set temperature, the thermostat automatically switches off the heat supply. Without it, the water would continue to be heated, wasting energy and increasing your heating bills.

Preventing Bacterial Growth (Legionella): This is a critical health and safety reason. The UK government and health organisations recommend that hot water be stored at a temperature of at least 60°C to kill harmful bacteria, such as Legionella, which can cause Legionnaires' disease. A thermostat allows you to set the water to this temperature and ensures it is maintained, especially if the water has been stagnant for a while.
