Proportion Guide:
A 1200mm horizontal radiator is specified primarily for installation beneath standard double-casement windows.
To achieve an architectural finish, the edges of the radiator panel should align directly with the edges of the window frame above it. This placement serves a specific functional purpose. Positioning the heat source beneath the glazing directly counteracts cold downdraughts from the glass, forcing the cold air to mix with the rising convection currents.
Clearance Guide: Pipework and Valves
When measuring wall space for a 1200mm radiator, the stated dimension covers the steel panel only. You must calculate additional clearance for the connection hardware.
The 90mm rule: Add approximately 90mm to the total width of the panel to accommodate standard
Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs) at one end and a lockshield valve at the other.
Total lateral space: A 1200mm radiator requires a minimum bare wall space of 1290mm.
Pipework centres: If you are laying new pipework under floorboards, the pipe centres must emerge at a distance of 1290mm apart to align correctly with the valve inlets on a 1200mm panel.
Is a 1200mm Radiator Powerful Enough For Your Room?
Because your installation is physically restricted to a 1200mm width, you must adjust the thickness of the panel to increase or decrease the heat output.
Before selecting a specific model, enter your room dimensions, window size, and insulation type into our internal
BTU Calculator.
If your required British Thermal Unit (BTU) output is low, select a 1200mm Type 11 (Single Panel). This sits tight against the wall and uses minimal space.
If your required BTU output is high, select a 1200mm Type 22 (Double Panel). This unit protrudes further from the wall but delivers nearly double the heat output without exceeding your 1200mm width restriction.
