Do you own a static caravan in the UK? Whether your caravan is for you or you rent it out for others to enjoy, ensuring the safety of the caravan is essential to protect not only your investment but also the well-being of everyone using this space.
Here at City Plumbing, we discuss the importance of hiring a professional for caravan maintenance, as well as the crucial aspect of gas safety in caravans. By implementing these preventive measures, you can significantly enhance the safety of yourself and others while using or storing a caravan in the UK.

Why Should You Hire a Professional for Caravan Maintenance?

Caravans require regular maintenance to ensure they remain in good working condition and safe for use. While some maintenance tasks can be done by the owner, it’s vital to hire a professional tradesperson to provide peace of mind knowing that the job is being done correctly and to the highest standard.
A professional will have the necessary qualifications, expertise and tools needed to identify and address any potential issues before they become major problems.

Gas Safety in Caravans Is a Priority for All Residents

Gas safety is a critical aspect of caravan maintenance that shouldn't be overlooked. Gas appliances in caravans, such as cookers and heaters, can pose a significant risk if not properly maintained.
Carbon monoxide poisoning is a real danger in poorly maintained gas systems and can have serious consequences. So, it's vital to have gas appliances serviced regularly by a Gas Safe engineer to ensure they are safe to use.

How Do I Ensure Gas Safety in My Caravan?

Caravans, being confined spaces with potential fuel sources like gas cylinders and cooking appliances, require diligent fire safety measures. So, it's crucial to be aware of and work to UK legal requirements and best practices when assuring caravan safety for all residents.
  • Landlords renting out static caravans have a legal obligation under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 (GSIUR) to have an annual gas safety check conducted by a Gas Safe registered engineer. They must also provide tenants with a copy of the gas safety record.
  • While annual gas safety checks are not legally mandatory for owners who only use their static caravan themselves, many caravan park operators insist on them as part of their site rules, and insurance policies often stipulate it. It’s also highly recommended for peace of mind.
  • It’s best practice to have gas appliances serviced regularly according to the manufacturer's instructions, ideally at the same time as the safety test.
  • Any work on a caravan's gas system, with the exception of changing gas cylinders or replacing hoses connected to them, must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer who has the appropriate LPG qualifications (e.g., CCLP1 or CoNGLP1, LAV, RPH, and appliance-specific ACS qualifications).
  • Carbon monoxide (CO) alarms conforming to EN50291 standards are highly recommended in caravans. They should be tested regularly, and their expiry dates checked.
Smoke Alarms: Install at least one smoke alarm that's suitable for caravans (look for BS EN 14604:2005 certification, especially optical alarms for smouldering fires). Test it weekly and replace batteries regularly. Consider removing the battery during long periods of non-use to prevent damp-related issues.
Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarms: Fit a CO alarm certified to BS EN50291-2, especially if you have fuel-burning appliances (gas cookers, heaters, etc.) CO is odourless and deadly.
City Plumbing offers a good selection of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. With renowned brands from Hispec to Honeywell, Fire Angel to Firehawk, all our products are certified and offer fantastic long-term warranties for enhanced peace of mind.
  • Adequate ventilation is crucial to prevent the build-up of gas fumes and carbon monoxide. Caravan air vents should never be blocked.
  • Gas cylinders should be stored securely in designated, ventilated lockers, preferably in an upright position.
  • Hoses should be checked regularly for wear and tear and replaced as needed. High-pressure hoses should be used when connecting directly to a cylinder or if the regulator pressure exceeds 50mbar.
  • Fire Extinguisher: Keep at least one fire extinguisher near the caravan’s exit. A water mist extinguisher is recommended as it's effective on most common fires, including electrical. Ensure everyone knows how to use it and check the pressure gauge regularly.
  • Fire Blanket: Keep a fire blanket in the caravan’s kitchen area, which is particularly useful for cooking oil or fat fires.

Stay Safe In Your Caravan All Year Round
