Black Friday has become synonymous with fantastic deals and savings, but it hasn’t always been that way. Black Friday as a day of deals started off in America, firstly as an alternative name for the busiest shopping day of the year and then subsequently as the day we know today.

‘Black Friday’ in whichever form has always sat the day after Thanksgiving. Initially it was coined by Philadelphia Police in 1961 as a designation for the busiest shopping day of the year, thanks in part to it being all hands on deck for the force and no holidays being allowed. This obviously brings a more negative connotation compared to what we envision these days.

More than 20 years later, in an attempt to alter the name’s perceptions, retailers changed the description to the day when shops started to turn a profit, thus going from ‘in the red’ to ‘in the black’.

Thanks to the Walmart owned ASDA stores, Black Friday has recently moved over to the UK, which has been quickly adopted by a large amount of stores and retailers. Coupled with the now just as popular ‘Cyber Monday’, Black Friday deals can be just as easily bought online and in the comfort of your own home.
