The Energy Efficiency Team

In 2010 we launched the Energy Efficiency team with the vision to make energy efficiency a staple part of any new build or retrofit project. We understand the needs of the construction industry, providing impartial advice, specifications and design services. As experts in this field, we’re here to help find the best solution for every project. What’s more, we have complete product ranges from air source heat pumps to ventilation systems, supplying you with everything you need.

Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs)

ASHPs capture heat from the outside air and this is passed over a refrigeration cycle. The heat is then transferred to the property’s heating and hot water systems, via a suitably sized heating emitter and hot water cylinder.

Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs)

GSHPs are similar to ASHPs, however, rather than capturing heat from the outside air, they extract heat from underground via pipe arrays or boreholes. GSHPs are more efficient than ASHPs when it comes to heating and hot water.

Underfloor Heating (UFH)

UFH can be connected to any type of heat source but is particularly effective when combined with ASHP or GSHP systems. UFH can be installed in new builds, extensions or retrofits and with lower water temperatures, it's a far more cost-effective and efficient way of heating properties.

Biomass Boilers

Biomass boilers are similar to conventional boilers, however rather than burning gas or oil, biomass boilers burn natural fuel sources such as wood pellets, wood chips or logs to provide heat to a property’s heating and hot water circuits.

Solar Thermal

Solar thermal systems collect heat from the sun using solar panels/collectors which are typically fitted on the property’s roof. The collected heat is then used to heat up water stored in the property’s hot water cylinder.

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) & Battery Storage

Solar PV systems are similar to solar thermal systems in that they use panels typically fitted on the property’s roof, however, PV panels capture the sun’s radiation and convert it into electricity. This electricity can be used directly in the home, exported back to the grid or stored in a battery storage system.

Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery (MVHR)

MVHR systems are ultimately used to make the indoor environment more comfortable. These systems are extremely efficient and work by extracting stale, moist air from the property and resupplying it with fresh, pre-heated, filtered air.

Waste Water Heat Recovery (WWHR)

WWHR is a system that uses residual heat from shower wastewater to preheat the incoming cold main that refills the system. As a result, less energy is used to heat the mains water to the specified temperatures.

Radiators & Infrared Heating

Traditional radiators can be used with heat pump systems, however, these have to be carefully sized due to the lower system temperatures. Alternatively, you can use low water content, fan assisted radiators which are better suited with heat pump systems.

Industry news

Renewable Heat Incentive

The Domestic RHI is a financial incentive given by the government to promote the installation of renewable heat technologies. The four qualifying technologies are: air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, biomass boilers and solar thermal.

10 Point Plan

In November 2020, the government launched its 10 Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution. This sets out the current vision for how the UK can achieve net zero carbon, focusing heavily on the decade ahead.

Legislation

Zero Carbon Homes

The Zero Carbon Homes policy requires all domestic new builds from 2016 onwards to mitigate all the carbon emissions products on-site, including the energy used to provide heating and cooling, hot water and lighting.

Future Homes Standard

The Future Homes Standard will require new build homes to be future-proofed with low carbon heating and world-leading levels of energy efficiency.

SAP

SAP stands for ‘Standard Assessment Procedure’ and is the government’s method for calculating the energy performance of dwellings. These calculations are only necessary for residential properties.
