How do heat pumps work?

Simply put, heat pumps work by extracting heat from the air, ground, or water. Once extracted, this heat is then compressed into usable heat that is sufficient enough to warm a building.

How long does it take to install an air source heat pump?

Air source heat pumps can typically be installed within 3-4 working days. Ductless systems (those without pipes) only take around one day to install.

How long does it take to install a ground source heat pump?

When it comes to ground source heat pumps, it’s tricky to predict how long it will take. More pipework is needed, as well as trenches or boreholes. Once these have been dug, it typically takes between 3-5 days to install a ground source heat pump.

What is a ductless heat pump system?

Ductless heat pumps don’t require air pipes to function. Instead, they consist of indoor and outdoor ‘heads’ that are fixed into walls, similar to bathroom vents. These are fully independent from each other, and can be turned on/off as needed.

How efficient are air source heat pumps?

Air source heat pumps are highly efficient. They are fully renewable-compatible, and can save users hundreds of pounds on yearly energy bills.

One potential drawback of air source heat pumps is that they aren’t fully optimised for below-freezing temperatures, and can use more electricity in freezing climates. Hybrid heat pump systems can help negate this.

Much like air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps can provide users with consistent energy savings, and are a worthwhile alternative to traditional heating methods - as long as users have the outdoor space for the required trenches or boreholes.

Can you program heat pumps?

Yes. Heat pumps can be programmed to work to a timetable, allowing them to generate extra heat at times where it’d be more efficient to do so. They can work well with thermostats, smart thermostats, and timers.

Do heat pumps require maintenance?

As with any heating system, heat pumps do require maintenance to keep them working at their best. The filters and fans used in a heat pump should be maintained annually, or as per the heat pump manufacturer’s recommendations.

How long does a heat pump last?

Heat pumps last between 15-25 years on average when properly maintained. With diligent maintenance and regular servicing, heat pumps can last even longer - making them a worthwhile long term investment.
