The owner of this off-grid cottage renovation was looking for a sustainable solution for heating and generating power for the property which would reduce his long term running costs. He had looked at a number of options but was unsure which would be the most suited to his needs.
The property was in the process of significant renovation and extension works and number of options from the full range of available technologies were considered. Having taken time to review the options and after carrying out a full room by room heat loss calculation, a 32kW biomass pellet boiler combined with a fully integrated underfloor heating system was installed. Installation details Product - Biomass Boiler Tariff - Domestic RHI System - 32 kW.
As the property had a large garage we were able to accommodate all the equipment, including the fuel store, with enough room left over to still function as a garage. To maximise the remaining space we integrated an ‘on demand’ (combi-style) hot water coil into the buffer tank to avoid the need for a separate hot water cylinder and save space.
We also advised the owner on the type of floor construction and coverings which would work best to optimise his underfloor heating system, and worked with his building contractors to ensure integration with the other building works. We were able to connect a new outbuilding to be used as a gym and hair salon to the biomass heating system via underground insulated heat main pipework and create a separate heating and hot water circuit for the building.
We advised on the RHI application and managed the Green Deal Assessment to ensure that the heat demand from both house and outbuildings would be taken into account and included within his RHI payments increasing his annual payments by over £1,000.
Biomass installation earns owner £10,000 a year in combined fuel savings

This small holding, required extensive renovation, consisted of a four-bedroom farmhouse, a barn conversion, a large agricultural barn, a dilapidated stable block and several other outbuildings.
The owner was looking for an environmentally and cost effective approach to heating.
Installation Details
► Product - Biomass Boiler
► Tariff - Non-Domestic RHI
System - 70 kW A 70kW wood chip boiler with 2200 litre buffer tank was installed in the large agricultural barn with a 30m3 fuel sto re. Heat mains run to the farmhouse and converted barn.
The boiler was sized to allow heating to be extended to other buildings in future. A flue gas recirculation unit was also fitted as the customer has plans to grow and chip their own miscanthus at some point.
Thanks to the government’s non-domestic Renewable Heat Incentive, this Biomass Boiler will pay for itself in less than 6 years and earn the farm £10,000 a year in combined fuel savings and incentive income.
