Biomass Boilers Explained

Biomass Boilers Explained

 Biomass Boilers

Biomass boilers use wood pellets, chips or logs to meet the heating and hot water demands of a property. The technology offers a carbon neutral alternative to oil or LPG that burn low-cost wood chips or pellets. The pellets are sourced from a sustainable manufacturer in order to comply with MCS.

Suitable for:

Biomass Boilers are most suitable for older properties with space and access for fuel delivery and storage. Biomass Boilers are cheaper to run than traditional boilers, in particular in comparison with oil or LPG. Biomass is also attractive to mains gas customers looking for a carbon-neutral solution, and qualify for the Renewable Heat Incentive.

With Biomass burning at a temperature similar to oil or gas it offers a straightforward replacement for an existing boiler with minimal additional work required to the heating system. It is the most suitable renewable technology for older buildings which are difficult to highly insulate. Biomass is popular with schools, farms and rural businesses, and earn an income from the government’s Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive.

Technical Information:

When compared with fossil fuels, like oil, gas or coal, biomass is a sustainable carbon neutral fuel. A biomass boiler offers an environmentally sound heating solution as it emits on average the same amount of carbon dioxide that is absorbed by plants, thus having little or no adverse affect on the earth's delicate CO₂ balance.

Biomass has been used as a source for heating by many generations in the form of wood-burning stoves and open fires. Recent advances in technology have led to the development of new types of boilers that use biomass cleanly and efficiently to heat both space and water.

As well as being 'green', biomass boilers reduce energy consumption, resulting in lower energy bills, especially in the face of the rising cost of traditional fuels. For customers living in rural areas where mains gas is not available, a biomass boiler is an attractive alternative compared with more conventional off-gas heating solutions such as oil and LPG. Cleaner and less volatile, biomass boilers are also independent of the fluctuating prices of oil and gas.
