Gas safety in Great Britain has changed. CORGI gas registration ended in Great Britain and Isle of Man on 31 March and no longer applies to gas safety law. From 1 April, all gas engineers must be on the new Gas Safe Register™ to do gas work lawfully. For more information about registration with Gas Safe Register go to www.GasSafeRegister.co.uk or call 0800 408 5577.

Registration
There is now only one gas registration scheme in Great Britain and Isle of Man, Gas Safe Register. Registering with Gas Safe Register is a legal requirement for anyone carrying out gas work in Great Britain and Isle of Man. Before applying to register it is essential that engineers hold valid evidence of competence. Gas Safe Register only accepts evidence of competence in gas safety such as:

• National Accredited Certification Scheme for individual Gas Fitting Operatives (ACS)
• ACS aligned National/Scottish Vocational Qualifications (NVQ/SVQ).

As a minimum requirement any registration application will need to include a minimum of one engineer, holding a relevant domestic core ACS or an aligned gas services NVQ/SVQ (6012), and for non-domestic a relevant core assessment plus one other ACS category.
There is a probationary period for businesses who are newly qualified or whose registration with the former CORGI gas registration scheme lapsed some time ago. This allows Gas Safe Register to monitor their approach to gas safety. During the probationary period, the business must notify Gas Safe Register of all gas work they have carried out. They will carry out inspections to make sure the work has been completed to the required standards.

For registration and general enquiries, contact register@gassaferegister.co.uk or call 0800 408 5577.

About the change to Gas Safe Register
The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) undertook a review of gas safety in 2006. This review concluded that there was a need for a clearer focus on gas safety and a strong case for modernizing the gas registration scheme to bring added benefits to gas consumers, as well as across the industry.

Gas Safe Register started on 1 April 2009. Now only Gas Safe registered engineers are legally allowed to carry out work on gas appliances or installations in Great Britain and Isle of Man.

Gas engineers have been made fully aware of the change and registration on the new scheme has taken place. A high profile publicity campaign is underway to tell the public that the CORGI gas register in Great Britain has been replaced with Gas Safe Register. There is no dual running of the gas registration schemes.
